No Madonna!

Berlins underground queer scene

Es gibt sie, die kleinen feinen Partys, auf denen Madonna ein Fremdwort ist und die nicht selten mit ihrer Musik Trends für die bekannten Clubs der Stadt setzen. Als feste Größe hat sich Berlin Hilton etabliert. Im nbi auf dem Gelände der Kulturbrauerei (city map 109) in Prenzlauer Berg finden jeden Mittwoch an Exzess grenzende Partys statt. Das studentische und vorwiegend männliche Publikum pflegt dabei den Manchester-Indie- Look und tanzt zu brutalen Elektrobässen. Vom Style her ähnlich, aber von mehr Frauen besucht ist der Poopsy Club. Dessen Location West Germany (114) im NKZ ist an einem der Verkehrsknotenpunkte Kreuzbergs gelegen, dem Kottbusser Tor, und dennoch schwer zu finden. Verrucht wie die Gegend sind auch die Gäste – sie tragen schrille Perücken oder grelle Strumpfhosen, Hauptsache Trash. Akustisch wird auf Indie-Sounds à la Le Tigre gesetzt.

Indie, Drag und queer Trash

Weitaus elektronischer geht es bei Borderline zu. Im Fire-Club, der zu einem der wenigen verbliebenen Off-Kulturarealen in Mitte gehört, dem Acud, wird Elektro-Rock und House zelebriert. Das Publikum ist eher jung und queer, wie auch bei dem Offszene-Neuling Suboptimal. Hier ist Geschlechtermischung Konzept: Zwei Frauen und zwei Männer legen zusammen feinsten Untergrund-Elektro in den Räumen des Golden Gate unter den Bögen der Jannowitzbrücke auf. Ein alter Hase ist dagegen der gemütliche Ackerkeller (90), hier heißen Partys „Nuttendiesel“ oder „Tod dem Mainstream“. Vor allem dienstags treffen sich hier die Mitte-Männer. Ebenfalls ein Klassiker ist die Kreuzberger AHA(Schwuz Hinterhaus 110). Die Keim- und Ideenzelle für schwullesbisches Leben gebiert Transenshows, Sexpartys, Drag Kings oder einfach Kaffeekränzchen, Hauptsache Off-Kultur.

Mostly male students dressed in Manchester-Indie look, dance to the sound of brutal electronic bass. The Poopsy Club is similar in style but the audience is mixed female and male. Its location is West Germany in NKZ, located in a very busy area in Kreuzberg, the Kottbusser Tor, nevertheless it is very hard to find. The guests are as infamous as the neighbourhood, wearing strange wigs and gaudily coloured tights, it has to be trashy. The sound is definitely Indie music in the style of Le Tigre.

Indie, Drag and queer Trash

The Borderline is far more governed by electronic music. It is located in one of the few off scene or underground areas in Mitte, the Fire Club of Acud. Here electronic Rock and House are celebrated. The audience is mostly young and queer just like at Suboptimal which is a new off scene location at Golden Gate under Jannowitzbrücke, where two women and two men are behind the turntables together, playing the finest in underground electronic music. A traditional spot is cosy Ackerkeller (90) where parties are called “bitchdiesel” or “kill mainstream”. Here the Mitte men meet mostly on Tuesdays. Another classic is AHA (Schwuz rear building) in Kreuzberg, the incubator where ideas for gaylesbian lifestyle are born, be it transvestite shows, sex parties, drag kings or maybe

Zwei bundesweite Magazine erscheinen neben der Siegessäule und Out in Berlin im gleichen Verlag. Das zweimonatliche schwule Magazin DU&ICH, am Kiosk und im Abo erhältlich. Und das lesbische L-MAG, zweimonatlich am Bahnhofskiosk, in der Szene und im Abo zu bekommen. The same publishing house prints two further nationwide magazines alongside the Siegessäule and Out in Berlin. The gay bi-monthly DU&ICH is available at newsstands or by subscription. The bi-monthly lesbian L-MAG is also sold at newsstands in train stations, in queer cafés and is available by subscription.
